To insert a field in a file proceed as follows:

. Access the Dictionary environment, selecting and
pressing the relative button from the dBsee main menu.

. Position the cursor on the file in which the fields are to
be defined and press the Fields button. A window with a list of
fields defined for the file will appear. If no fields have been
defined, the field definition frame will automatically pop up so that
the first field can be inserted.

. Press the Ins key to insert a new field. The name of the
file it belongs to and the relative description are brought to the
frame automatically and cannot be modified.

. Insert the name of the field and confirm with Enter. The
F7 function key displays a list of already defined fields that are
present in the Symbols file. A field can also be selected from one of
       those listed.

. Insert the Field Type by choosing between C=Character,
       N=Numerical, D=Data, L=Logical e M=Memo. By using the
F7 (Search) or Alt-Down Arrow keys it is possible to open a
list for the selection of the available types.

. Define the field length and the eventual number of decimals
       for the numerical fields.

. Choose the picture for the GET of the field. In case that
the field type is character, and the length less or equal to 10, dBsee
builds a default picture with the ! template character, which
converts input to uppercase. If the field is longer, the default
picture is built with the template character defined in the
Projects-Options environment. The proposed picture can be changed.
The F5 key cycles through the available types.

. Choose the picture for the SAY of the field. This field gets
automatically inherited from the GET picture previously chosen, but it
       can be modified freely.

. Insert a brief description of the field. The string must be
alphanumeric with a maximum of 30 characters.

. The message is inherited automatically from the description.
It can, however, be modified and can be a maximum of 80 characters.

. Press, with Enter or Alt-O, the Options button.
A window is displayed in which the following can be inserted:

     . The default value

. Formal validation checks (data not valid if)
Additional information of the type of controls available on the
fields can be found in the Field control chapter.

. The error messages associated to the formal checks

. The Pre-edit expression needed to evaluate the data before
       the get

. The Post-edit expression needed to evaluate the data after
       the get

. Whether the field is mandatory or not

     . The precomputed expression

. The indication when to write the precomputed expression

. A Slot that can contain additional information not requested
       by the system.

. Press the F10 key to confirm the data inserted.

To continue inserting other fields, press the F9 key (Save and
continue inserting) in order to save. Otherwise, press F10 to save
   this field only.
