 E0       E0 = The modem does not echo back everything you say to
          it.  This is the norm.
          E1 = the modem echoes back all the commands you send
          it.  Some programs require the E1 setting whereas most
          are simply confused by the echo.  Sometimes you can get
          double and triple echoes if software or other hardware
          is also echoing.
