    This is the model independent version of strdup(); it duplicates
    string and returns a pointer to the duplicate string. See
    strdup() for more information.

    Returns:    Pointer to the duplicate string if successful; NULL
                otherwise.

 Portability:   Not supported by the ANSI standard.
