Too Many Mode Switches Per Second
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because DOS runs in real mode and your CA-Clipper application runs in
protected mode, each call to DOS requires a switch to real mode, then
back to protected mode when the call returns. Frequent switches between
protected mode and real mode will degrade your program's performance.
There may be an additional delay of 50 to 600 microseconds before an
external interrupt can be serviced. The length of the delay depends on
the quality of the machine's BIOS code. Typically, delays greater than
150 microseconds only occur on 80286 machines. To see how much time a
mode switch takes on your machine, run PMINFO. Most systems are able to
handle at least 1000 switches per second.
