The word Database identifies a group of data of interest for a company
or organisation, stored by a computer on a storage support (ex. hard disk)
and manipulated by one or more applications.

For instance, the information about the customers, the suppliers, the
available stock quantity and the amount sold of a distribution company is
   stored in a database.

In order to be manageable by an application, the information in the
database must be structured. The data structure definition is described in
   the paragraph Data definition.

Once the database's structure has been set, the way data is entered and
managed must be defined. One or more Applications are created to
manipulate the database. The way applications are defined, is described in
   the paragraph entitled Data management.

Notice the distinction between database and application. A database is the
place where data is stored, and the application is the program that
interacts with the database. One database can be managed by more
   applications.
